Counterfeit 102

Obverse 2: Cast from Genuine Obverse Die

Reverse B: Cast from Genuine Reverse Die

Obverse 2                                                          Reverse B

Comments: An 1875 counterfeit half dollar purchased by Gerry Fortin April 2014 and obviously a cast piece with light weight of 8.9g. Base metal is suspected to be antimony. Normal coin turn reverse alignment with reasonable reeding. Reeding is interrupted at Liberty's foot and is most likely the mold inlet point. Note the long upward diagonal region starting at the potential mold inlet on obverse and opposite on reverse starting at A(M)ERIA and proceeding downward. The darker region is most likely a different metal composition as the rest of the counterfeit and appears to be much more grainy as typical of antimony counterfeits.

On Counterfeit 102, the date position is level while on Counterfeit 101, the date has obvious upward slope.
