Counterfeit 101

Obverse 1: Crude Liberty and Date Placement

Reverse A: Weak O Mintmark

Obverse 1                                                 Reverse A

Comments: Both the obverse and reverse dies are crudely cut. The faint New Orleans mintmark is directly below the left upright of (D)IME. The first plate coin exhibits a bulged reverse die, eliminating central device details. All seen have been in copper, with perhaps 3-4 seen total with only the above plate coin with the missing O mintmark.

During August 2010, Larry Schmidt provided scans for contempory counterfeit Seated dimes in his collection. The third set of obverse/reverse images above is from Larry's collection and provides excellent details for the hand cut reverse die including the position of the New Orleans mintmark. Larry report that his specimen has a silver wash over a brass core.

Plate Coins: B. Greer Collection, VF Grade Estimate (Images 1-2), Larry Schmidt Collection, EF Grade Estimate (Images 3).
